INSPIRED
/Every artist is inspired by art, architecture, nature and things they see, hear and feel around them. I am excited to tell you about a few of mine. For me, inspiration comes from visual stimulation that translates into a deep feeling of appreciation and gratitude, which was my motivation for creating Outside >IN. There are a few artists whom I studied in school whose work I’ve been fortunate enough to see in real life. My work is a hybrid of photography and paint/graphic arts, a combination that utilizes technology to craft a final product that I feel best expresses my abilities. I am passionate about photography, art and architecture, and the artists, past and present, who have influenced me in these disciplines.
One of my all-time favorites from the early days of the abstract movement is Mark Rothko. The simplicity of his work and his brilliant use of color and space denote his mastery of the “less is more” theory. Every time I see his work, I feel good inside.
From a more emotional perspective, I have to say that, in spite of the over-commercialization for some of her later works, Georgia O’Keefe was a tremendous influence. I find her style, innovation and persona to be superbly interesting and emotionally stimulating to say the least.
Lastly I want to mention René Magritte, whose surrealistic style is mind-bending in such a subtle way that you aren’t sure what you’re responding to. Seeing his work in person at the Met in NYC was so validating to me. I have always loved his genius for subtle abstraction, paradoxical lighting and ability to weave a sci-fi element into his work, which I find utterly fascinating.
Current artists for whom I hold a special appreciation range from architects to photographers. Frank Gerhy is a true genius – his ability to take functional three-dimensional spaces and execute them into incredible works of abstract art is unbelievable = mind blown! And to see his sketches and final build-outs in real life is an honor.
An artist you may not have heard of that I discovered through social media is photographer Clark Little. I cannot adequately explain his radical and unique perspective of oceans and waves, but you’ll do yourself a favor if you take time to check out his work at https://clarklittlephotography.com. I share his passion for the water and love how he shoots from inside – his work is absolute perfection.
